Patio Preview

The Riviera Country Club
Pacific Palisades, California
Was played at Torrey last year due to wildfires

  • Last played here in 2024

  • Signature event with 72 players

  • One of the few Signature Events with a cut

    • Top 50 + within 10 strokes of lead make cut

  • Roughly 7,400 yards (slightly less)

    • Change of elevation throughout course

  • Par 71

  • Greens: Poa Annua (West Coast)

    • Similar agronomy to Torrey Pines (South) and Pebble Beach

    • 12.5 on Stimpmeter

    • 7,500 sq ft

  • Not a ton of bunkers, no water

  • Fairway and rough is Kikuyu grass

    • Rough usually short here

  • Driver usage has been at least 71% each of last 4 years (2021-2024)

    • Slightly more driver-heavy than Tour average

  • It is difficult to find fairways here

    • Driving Accuracy last 4 years ranged from 47.2% to 53.8%

      • PGA Tour average is 60.5%

    • Good Drive % has been under 77% last 4 years

      • PGA Tour average 81.5%

    • Distance from center of fairway usually around 29-30 feet

      • PGA Tour average 23.4 feet

    • Missing the fairways isn’t an absolute death sentence so long as you can hit the big greens from the rough on second shots

      • That’s not an easy task here, as GIR% from the Rough was just 44% in each of the last 2 events (7.5% less than Tour average)

    • Need to stay out of fairway bunkers, which are more penal than being in the rough

      • GIR % from fairway bunker last 4 years: 36.3%, 31.9%, 30.5%, 35%

        • PGA Tour Average 48.3%

  • Overall Greens-in-Regulation % no higher than 59% in last 4 Genesis

    • PGA Tour Average 66%

    • Players will go for the greens aggressively on Par 5s and drivable Par 4

      • Hitting the green when doing so will set players up for eagle chances

  • Long iron success is going to be crucial

    • Compared to Tour average, very few approach shots will come from 50-150 yards (only about a quarter of shots)

    • Last 2 years, about half of approach shots came from 150-200 yards and about another quarter came from 200+

  • Scrambling/Around-the-Green probably trends to the easy side, so long as you avoid the bunkers – which is the hardest place to get up and down from here

  • Putting overall is a challenge here, but especially from distance due to undulations and speed

    • 3-putt avoidance from 25+ feet 11.1% last 5 years

      • PGA Tour average 8.9%

    • Historically difficult inside 10 feet and even 5 feet, but players had more success from these ranges in 2024 than they did in the 4 years prior

  • Par 3 average score in 2024: 3.04 (5-year average 3.08)

  • Par 4 average score in 2024: 4.06 (5-year average 4.09)

  • Par 5 average score in 2024: 4.43 (5-year average 4.51)

    • Avoiding bogeys on the Par 3s and scoring on the Par 5s is crucial

    • Par 4s are most challenging

  • Good crossover here with other long and difficult courses on tour like Augusta, Torrey, Quail, Bay Hill and others
