Course Preview

Oakmont Country Club

• Just outside Pittsburgh to the NE

  • PA Turnpike neighbors course

• 10th US Open played at this venue

• First time played here since Dustin Johnson won at -4 in 2016

  • Only 4 players were under par, 2 players even par

  • Weather was significant factor and delayed event

  • 30-ish players that were in that field and playing again this year

  • Scottie was an amateur and shot a 69 in Round 1, followed by 78 and then MC by 1 stroke

• Henry C. Fownes design

  • One-hit wonder; only course he designed

• 2021 US Amateur event was played here

  • Bridgeman, Gerard, Highsmith among those who played in that event and in this field

• Restoration in 2023-2024 led by Gil Hanse

  • Intention was to restore course to original design 

  • Greens expanded

  • Bunkers restored

  • #7 re-designed giving players options for safer or riskier OTT shots

  • Irrigation and drainage upgrades

  • Lengthened course

  • Tree removal

• Par 4, roughly 7,400 yards

• Full field 150+ players; Top 60 + ties make cut

• Greens: Poa (east-coast poa)

  • Averaging a massive 8,000+ sq ft

    • Anywhere from roughly 5,500 - 12,000 sq ft depending on hole

  • Oddly-shaped

  • Surrounded by deep bunkers

  • Ample run-off/false fronts

  • Should run very fast if the weather is not wet

• 200+ bunkers; no water hazards

  • Church pew bunkers between 3rd and 4th fairway; 100 yards long

  • Better to be in greenside bunkers than the greenside rough

• Rough is INSANE here

  • 5” at its shortest

  • Will be cut to 5” weekend prior, but not expected to be cut again Mon-Wed before event

• Grassy ditches line fairways on multiple holes

  • Unique lies that will surely be penal

• 4 Par 3s

  • Ranging from 182 - 289 yards (!)

    • 289-yard #8 is the hardest green to hit on the course

• 12 Par 4s

  • Ranging from 312 - 507 yards 

    • Some of them are scoring holes, but some will yield doubles or worse due to rough

• 2 Par 5s

  • Both 610+ yards

  • #12 will not have many players hitting green in 2

• Multiple blind tee shots

• Wide variety of approach shots

  • Some angled, some downhill, some uphill

• Toughest 4-hole stretch in last 2 US Opens here were #7 - #10

• Course demands creativity on approach shots given the complex layout 

• Accuracy bigger advantage than distance simply because of how impossible the rough is

  • Just missing the fairway by a couple feet is worse than huge misses

    • Huge misses may provide players with a chance at a better lie given the grass would be trampled down by the gallery in those areas

• Because course is so hard, don’t be surprised to see a random leaderboard in Round 1

  • Cream will rise throughout weekend
